Under the slogan “When your pain is inevitable, to relieve it is my mission” Comandos de Salvamento will be doing their operation “Comandos to the Rescue 2013″ held during Holy Week from March 24-30th. To inaugurate the operation, CDS performs an emergency drill on the beach of El Majahual where over 1,300 volunteers including 140 lifeguards participate to test their skills in the care of people who need aid.

Roberto Cortez Orlando Cruz, Executive Director of CDS reports the goal of yearly drills is to “assess the capabilities of lifeguards and volunteer lifeguards to meet their potential and move the right people to beaches and our first-aid highway stations during Holy Week “. The Salvadoran Air Force collaborates with a Huey helicopter and local fisherman offer two fishing boats to carry out evacuation of victims in shallow and deep waters.

EMS providers are prepared in basic first aid and advanced skills and lifeguards receive training at Obispo Beach for a year by CDS veterans who are residents of surrounding beach communities. The drill will also assess the quality of patient care from volunteers that will be located in the “El área de concentración de victimas” (beach hospital) where they will be triaged for rapid transport if need. CDS intends to serve Salvadorans during the upcoming Easter holidays and fulfill its mandate to “save the lives of people when they are in danger as a result of nature or of man.”

CDS Volunteers from our Vector fumigation unit suspended operations in Ilopango due to threats generated by armed people in la colonia La Lasca. One volunteer was hit in the head with a gun and two other municipal employees were verbally assaulted. Admin of CDS decided to withdraw their members from the area due to safety concerns even though in other areas of the city, fumigation campaigns are taking place in order to combat Dengue/Mosquito Larvae. Luis Colato was discharged home from the Social Security Hospital where he was operated on in mid March after suffering a CVA provoked from hitting his head while attending to patients in Santa Ana. He was comatose for two weeks and has slowly recovered. He can remember some names but cannot recall everyone since, as he states, “they changed out my chipset”. Throughout his recovery, CDS held many marches hoping for improvement of his health status. He was transported home today to El Plan del Pito in Mejicanos by colleague Edgar Jhonny Ramos and other volunteers. Luis is the director of the Comandos First Aid school where he has offered courses to medical students entering the University of El Salvador, and to other educational centers throughout San Salvador. He also teaches our new EMS recruits and offers refresher courses to CDS bases throughout the country. His knowledge has educated many generations in first responder pre hospital care. Luis also serves as secretary on the CDS board. CDS administration are grateful to all who have supported Luis Colato.
